Buzzin': Antlers

If there’s one thing I love, it’s folky alternative indie music. If there are two things I love, it’s that and series of adjectives without any conjunctions. And if there are three things I love, it’s those two and band names that relate back to the name of my blog. Two of these three are reasons I’m really digging The Antlers right now. They’re a some-tet from Brooklyn (and I say some-tet because their numbers keep changing, not because it’s a cool new numerical adjective you’ve never heard of. Though I’m not above making up words to screw my readers up.) who play pretty awesome music, and they’re self-releasing an album, Hospice, on March 3rd.
The music is a little ambient at first, especially the second single, “Bear,” which enters with a whisper of a beautifully delivered simple melody over a reverbed piano section, and then punches up the volume with softly strummed electric guitars and shaking drums. It’s a fun little song about a Bear (surprise!), and I like animals. But just when you’re ready to give up on it, and assume that nothing more will happen instrumentally, the second chorus explodes with distorted guitars and swelling strings. It’s a beaut.
As for “Two,” the lead single, a strummed guitar section charges with falsetto vocals into a TV on the Radio-inspired melody.
