Music for a Thursday: "The President's Dead"

There’s something very bizarre about Thursdays. Unless, like me, you’re in college, in which case Thursday is Friday, and everything is good. Because then Friday is Saturday I, and Saturday is Saturday II: Secret of the Ooze, and Sunday — well, Sunday’s just plain old Sunday — but still, 3 day weekends! Every week! Recently, however, it’s come to my attention that, for some people, Thursdays are like Wednesdays. After crying at the thought for a couple of hours, I decided I’d help the universe the only way I know how: by blogging. Hence, “Music for a Thursday.”

In order to properly be “Music for a Thursday,” the song must simultaneously encompass the melancholy of Wednesday and the elation of Friday. Apparently, that’s what Thursdays are like. Our first suspect, “The President’s Dead,” does both. A lively Okkervil River b-side, off their Overboard and Down Australian tour-only EP, the song is nowhere near as protest-y or sad as it sounds. Instead, it’s a lively story-song about how an earth-shaking moment like the death of a President makes you reevaluate your priorities and treasure what you have. Beautifully imagistic and with a singalong chorus, this song is the balls. And it’s totally Thursday. For those non-college types, that is.
