I have something for you. Something you might want. Something that, if you are Marquis Meowmers IV, you have wanted for almost a year now. I have E-603’s sophomore effort. I am listening to it RIGHT NOW. It is called Torn Up and it is on my speakers. Like, now. And if you want to get at some sick TRACKS as well as my initial thoughts you should click the link and MAKE THE FUCKING JUMP.

Previous E-603 coverage on The Show was nothing but absolute praise, and with good reason. Something For Everyone was simply fantastic, a mash-up album that got all the fundamentals right. Its beauty lay in its simplicity, as E-603 (real name Ethan Ward) had simply mastered the ability to start and stop samples in all the right spots. Instead of creating a seamless Girl Talk clone in which generic samples flowed in and out of each other fading into nothingness, his simplistic start and stop method made for an interesting style which was noticeably different from his contemporaries. The peak of the album, a mind blowing combination of Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and alt-rapper Spank Rock’s ‘Coke and Wet’ nearly made me rip the steering column from my poor Subaru Forester almost every time I heard it while driving. I don’t think I’ve listened to any mash-up album as much as Something.

Simply put, Torn Up is a grown up version of Something For Everyone.

Opening with Eminem laid over Nirvana’s ‘Territorial Pissings’, the album takes a path much more technically proficient than its predecessor without losing any of the artist’s signature sound. Samples flow a little more naturally and are stacked a little deeper into the track, meaning less a+b+c and more a+b+c+d+e+z+x+HowardStern. However, early Blink 182 and Lenny Kravitz samples keep the album from taking on too much of GT’s Night Ripper’s overly artsy glitch sound. The album really takes stride by the second track, reaching its first “peak moment” on ‘Lights Out’ with the combination of Lil Jon, and about 4 other samples I can’t quite name. Ultimately, while Lit might be laid behind Ying Yang Twins (’Hey Shorty’), E-603 knows when to pull his punches and create a slower jam, which makes the highlights even more lovable. This is not to suggest that the album is ‘boring’ at any moment, as the sheer technical ability will leave the listener in awe during the moments of rising action or denouement. The word that keeps popping into my head is “smart.” Torn Up is a very smart mash-up album.

I don’t want to go over the entire album step by step because I am lazy and I need to get up to work my manual labor job, but I can tell you that you will not be disappointed when this album is dropped later this week. Be you a casual GT fan, a hardcore mash-head, or a technical nerd who wants to know what program E-603 uses to chop, screw, slop, mash, crunch, and generally create, you WILL find a reason to like this album. And to prove this to you, below are some kick-ass sample tracks. Animal Show exclusive. We love you too.

E-603 – Lights Out (YSI) (Mediafire)

E-603 – If You Wanna (YSI) (Mediafire)

Finally, I only discovered E-603 a few months ago, but it feels like I’ve been waiting for this album for years.

a few tracks a couple days early is like christmas, thank you.

Loved his last album, and these tracks sound fantastic.

Check out 1:45 into “Shake Your Rump” once the album drops to see Ethan sample his side project Air Bud’s filling-rattling synth lines. It made me grin big.

Also, it should be noted that the Air Bud post linked above was Marquis’ first post as a Show staffer. Oh, the memories!

Nice post. I’m still partial to Girl Talk, but E-603 is pretty damn great himself. A little LL Cool J & Timbaland/Toto never hurt anybody.

After a few minutes of listening to this ADD riddled concoction, I quickly became bored with it.

sounds like e-603 got a hold of super mash bros’ “kisses and thugs” track and regurgitated it into “hey shorty.”

Thank you so much for finding Immuzikation’s successor. Finally, someone doing something totally new with mash-ups- love it!

What’s the track on the background on “Hey Shorty” at 0:10 ?

  13. 2009 June 19

“Hey Shorty” definitely takes the cake. I’m not so sure about the other tracks. Vanessa Carlton kinda kills it for me in “If You Wanna.” Overall, I dig it.

the war in Iraq continues, Barack Obama still president, and mash-up artists use the same samples in different ways. More news you already knew about at 11.

So my friend has only allowed me to listen to the first track (among the others that have been posted on this wonderful blog) so we can listen to the rest of the album while driving around tonight. When we first listened I think the general consensus was “What the fuck?” as it started off on some hardcore D12 song yelling “Pour your 40 out!” At first it sounded more like something you’d blast in a frat house while still keeping that Night Ripper glitchy beat every now and then, but on second listen I realize that this is not some “frat house jam,” but a straight up balls-to-the-walls (as Ethan would put it) mash-up setting some new standards. I’m really excited to hear the rest. My favorite part hands down from the first track though is “Fly Away” and “Snap Your Fingers”.

    ***I need an opinion***

So, I am finished with the album and I think E has got it down. He is like the Renaissance Man of mash-ups going from 90’s skateboard punk to babymaking R&B. He truly has come into his own. My only issue (and for having liked the album so much it is kind of a BIG issue) is the ending. My favorite part of his first album, Something for Everyone, was “Knuck All Alone” as it was this big crescendo where everyone would dance their hearts out and be glad they had stuck with the album the whole time. Having loved this ending so much and being so into this album I expected something similar in Torn Up. I thought he was really going somewhere with the “Viva La Vida” instrumental and then felt I knew it would be awesome with the Beatles track (which is rare) coming in but all of a sudden he uses the same “Pop Bottles” sample that Girl Talk uses live with his signature Journey sample at the end and (even worse) fades out. This felt all too anticlimactic (even rushed) after having ooo-ed and ah-ed over all the other clever combinations he made in the past hour. I would not even mind if he would “Remaster” the album with a slight change on the ending to make the entire piece perfect and put it out for download again. I was wondering if anyone else may have had the same opinion.

(But really, this album is sick nonetheless.)

This is NOT good. WTF are you trying to pawn off on us? It is sad to say, but Girl Talk is 10X better than this amateur shiz.

The sample is “Tom’s Diner” by Suzanne Vega

  30. 2009 June 20

No, but E-603 and Girl Talk are actually separate artists. I hope this clears up any confusion!

    Gotta know

what is the silly minimal synth stuff going on at the beginning (0:16) of Let It Bump?

I remember it being in an Ad for something that I watched recently, but I dunno what it is, and it’s driving me actually crazy.

    LOVING THIS ALBUM.

(but hating the Gaga + MGMT bit. worst kids mash ever.)

Torn Up is one of the greatest mash-up albums i have ever heard, but if you are interested in listening to more i highly suggest you downloading the album Fuck Bitches. Get Euros. by Super Mash Bros from their website. http://www.lazerwolf.com

yeah, dude; we’ve all been there.
    http://theanimalshow.org/2009/03/19/ive-just-been-falcon-punched-in-the-ear/

The problem I’ve been having with Super Mash Bros is that it feels a little like Family Guy — yeah, I liked it at the time, but now I’m embarrassed to admit I ever enjoyed it. Their pairings are brilliantly thought-out, but their execution (or anyone’s, excepting possibly Milkman) pales in comparison with E-603’s seamlessly professional delivery.
