Hello, Marquis Meowmers here. I’d like to apologize for the recent lack of updates, finals has gotten in the way of everything. Surprise, I know. But I’m back for the next 20 minutes, and I’d like to talk to you about something near and dear to my little cat heart: Tennessee.

Hello, Marquis Meowmers here. I’d like to apologize for the recent lack of updates, finals has gotten in the way of everything. Surprise, I know. But I’m back for the next 20 minutes, and I’d like to talk to you about something near and dear to my little cat heart: Tennessee.

Tennessee is famous for a lot of things. In addition to being home for 3/4ths of The Animal Show’s staff, Tennessee pretty much owns Bonnaroo, Jack Daniels, The Smokey Mountains, The San Antonio Taco Company (yeah, that makes sense), Miley Cyrus (for half of the year), Pat Summit, part of The Mississippi River, Goo Goo Clusters, Three Six Mafia, The Batman Building, an unsightly ‘Sun Orb,’ Kid Rock, and a giant statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest (who wasn’t as bad of a dude as the history books/KKK would like you to believe). But I would never say that our modern music scene is as great as the media makes it out to be. Gospel and Country-Western still reign unless you live in Memphis, which has been devoid of good Blues since like 1970. Sure, we put out Be Your Own PET, The Silver Jews, Lambchop, and Jay Reatard, but the TN indie scene has yet to make the huge splash that NYC, CA, Portland, and Baltimore have. And that sucks, because there are a ton of great acts residing in our phallic-looking state. Luckily, I was put on this Earth to do two things and two things only: talk about music and rep TN till I die. And now that I have this blog thing, I can do both AT THE SAME TIME. So I’ll start with a fucking banging remix/mash-up DJ from the greatly under-appreciated Murfreesboro scene who goes by the name Shit Wolf.

Shit Wolf makes some really really rad re-edits and mash-ups using mainstream vocals and mostly dance-noise instrumentals. My favorite track (so far) is Soulja Bored: Soulja Boy’s theme song mashed with a truly rad Wavves sample. Game, set, and match, right?

Nope. Almost every song on each of his free EPs rule more than I could ever imagine. There is honestly nothing I love more than mash-up artists who use really weird punk/noise samples in their music, which is why I implore Greg Gillis and Ethan Ward (I know you or Vinny will read this, you lazy bastards) to use more of them in their megamixes. And while almost every song Shit Wolf has made available is Hype Machine worthy, there are some obvious stand-outs. His re-edit of Dan Deacon’s recent single Red F is ready for your next party playlist, as is Keep Hustlin’ and Your City Is On Fireman (which utilizes a Sim City theme song sample). It seems like Shit Wolf is putting out new release every 5 minutes, so keep checking his MySpace!

But enough about me, lets get our Shit Wolf on:

I love Dan Deacon. I love his music. I love the fact that he is not ashamed of loving cheese burgers. I love his ideology of art as a complete concept rather than separate mediums (see Ultimate Reality). I love his love of stupid tee shirts. I loved Silly Hat vs. Eagle Hat, I loved Spiderman of The Rings, and I love that he is able to reinvent himself, musically, from album to album. I love his interactive live shows. I love his dedication to independent artists. I love that he loves Girl Talk. And guess what? I FUCKING LOVE his newest album: Bromst.

On Bromst, Deacon really shows a newfound sense of maturity, moving away from both his semi-harsh noise sound on his earliest recordings and his pseudo-electro-thrash-noise sound on Spiderman of The Rings/Acorn Master. Instead, Bromst explores the more relaxed side Deacon’s creative capacities, grabbing the baton right where songs like ‘Big Milk’ and ‘Pink Batman’ let go on Spiderman of The Rings. Of course, he really takes ‘relaxed’ to a whole new level of Dan Deacon on several tracks, including one which opens like a Lullatone jam, and another that features nothing but looped vocals of a girl singing some incomprehensible lyrics in the style of a traditional Appalachian folk singer… sweet.

But why should I just describe it? Let’s hear some samples already!

Dan Deacon – Wet Wings (this is the one with the looped ladies’ larynx)

The album is set to drop March 24th, and you can pre-order the vinyl HERE. I really hope you pre-order it, because this album rules… 11 songs, most of which pass the 6 minute mark. Of course, if you really want, the album leaked like 9 days ago, and is thus available all across the internet.

This album is probably the 2nd best I’ve heard this year… 2009 is looking really promising right now.

(P.S I JUST FOUND OUT THAT DAN DEACON HAS RELEASED ALL ALBUMS FROM THE PRE-SPIDERMAN OF THE RINGS ERA ON HIS WEBSITE FOR FREE… CHECK THEM ALL OUT HERE)

Hello. I am Marquis Meowmers IV, and I have been asked by Edward to provide you with interesting things to listen to. My title of Marquis denotes that I am above an Earl, but below a Duke. I one day hope to assassinate my father, the Grand Duke Whiskers, so that I may take my rightful place in the Kingdom of Stupid Pet Names. But I digress… for today, my friends, I am here to present to you the explosive music of Air Bud.

Air Bud is related to E-603 by way of members; Ethan (the ‘E’ of E-603) plays keyboards, drinks beer, and screams his lungs out. Though this may excite some of the mash-up fanatics that frequent this site, you should be warned that this new material takes a significantly different direction from Something For Everyone. Direct comparisons can be drawn to electro-punk outfit, The Death Set, with hints of Dan Deacon (who has new tunes up on his MySpace) and Matt & Kim (who just put out a new album) thrown in. Ultimately, Air Bud sounds exactly like the party scene from 10 Things I Hate About You* (you know, the one where Kat gets too drunk and dances on a table to, like, Sublime) combined with the party scene from SLC Punk (you know, the one with the fight between that guy from ‘Friends’ and some Morman rednecks). Super-fun synths plus drum machines plus mindless screaming plus lyrics like “You people think we’re dogs / but we just want to rock / you think we give a shit / but we don’t give a fuck” combine to make one super-fun, 4-song EP. While this might not be everyone’s cup of tea, those with the urge to chug PBR while shooting skeet with grandma’s china set instead of clay pigeons might enjoy this shift of tempo.

The best part? The EP is free off of their MySpace site by way of ZShare.

Sample one song here: The Internet – Air Bud

*R.I.P Heath Ledger

(EDITOR’S NOTE: AS IF YOU NEEDED ANY FURTHER REASON TO LISTEN, CHECK OUT THIS PICTURE OF THE BAND. AWESOME, RIGHT? — Ed. Edw.)

(EDWARD’S NOTE: ALSO, MARQUIS MEOWMERS IV IS THE NEW WRITER I PREVIOUSLY REFERRED TO AS “DOUG.” HE TOOK THIS WHOLE ANIMAL SHOW THING FAR TOO LITERALLY. I STILL SUPPORT THE SUPER-COOL PEN NAME.)
