Best. Days. Ever.

As all you avid readers remember, I promised a more thorough summer mashup article a few days weeks blogyears ago. And although we met pretty recently, I’m reliable. And I want you to know that. I’m here for you, and more specifically, I’m here to hopefully make you outrageously, Edward-esque cool*. So without further ado, I bestow upon you some summer sensations (and alliteration).
First on my summer hit list is “If I Were a Free Fallin’ Boy” by DJ Earworm. This one is for your Beyoncé mashup playlist, to go right behind “Single Foxes (Put A Wood On It).” Two gems put together in a solid fashion, good enough for me. It runs little bit slower than most mashups, but it’s enjoyable nonetheless.

The other thing I seemed to have skipped in my rapid launch into the blogosphere was my Michael Jackson tribute. Sadly, this too seems to have been done ad nauseum, but hopefully one more MJ mashup will not make me sink to “Entertainment Tonight” status. The Animal Show was extremely comforting to me during the first few hours, giving me “Thriller” and “Billie Jean” mashups to blast loud enough to impel my dad to moonwalk on his way to yell at me. My favorite part of this particular MJ tribute is the song choice. Not MJs, but rather his company, Steve Miller Band. “Keep On Till You Get Enough” by DJ Gizmo (remember him from icebergxc’s sacrosanct MJ Mashup article), integrates the SMB classic “Rock’n Me” into MJ’s immortal “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough”. And while I can’t decide if finding a MJ mashup that my dad enjoys is good or bad, it seems that it’s just so impressive that it crosses generational gaps.

Last but not least in this mashup bonanza is a mix of Beastie Boys and Matt & Kim. Matt & Kim, the chic Brooklyn duo, released Grand at the beginning of this year. While Beastie Boys have been dropping hits since Saddam came to power (1979, a pretty interesting year that I sadly missed). The mashup combines “Good Ol’ Fashion Nightmare,” which was very good on its own, with the Paul’s Boutique classic “Shake Your Rump.” Matt & Kim create beats galore while Beastie brings “more rhymes than Jamaica’s got mangoes.” The Hood Internet, known for their Chicago love, create a nice Brooklyn tribute.

It’s true — I’ve sunk to a new low. A whole week without fresh new jams comin’ atcha from Showtown. How have you survived? More importantly, why have you survived? Was life worth living without the Show? No, of course not. But I appreciate you muddling.

I wish I had some sort of great excuse for my ignoring you, but I don’t. Except this one: I’m a full-time student, and this job doesn’t pay. At all. Not one shiny penny comes to me. I do it out of the goodness of my own heart. I know, I know — save the thanks for later. Leave the idolizing remarks in the comments section. Now’s not the time. What it is time for, however, are some fresh Spring tunes, guaranteed to make your booty shake and the house quake. Live, from Brunswick Maine, It’s Animal Show time.

The first song I’m going to share with you is the single off Show favorites (and commentors) Super Mash Bros.’ new album, tentatively titled All About the Scrillions, which will be rattling your fillings in early June. The song’s called “Kisses & Thugs,” and it’s making me hungry for more.

Next, I’m going to drop a duo of ground-stomping goodies which I’ve been saving forever: a sweet remix of Santigold’s brilliant “Unstoppable,” featuring Li’l Wayne and Drake. Nuff said. And then there’s a Daft Punk vs. Beastie Boys mash, “Intergalactic Human,” courtesy of DJ Earworm. Nothing new, but a gem nonetheless. So, sorry for the slow April, but we’re still here and we still know how to get down.

I once read an article somewhere which said something about mashups. Maybe I’ll tell you about it later. Anyway, in it, they blabbered on about this dude, DJ Earworm, who makes the sort of mashups that cause you think about how much music exists as a social construct or something, just inherently, dude. And then you get all deep and stare glazy-eyed into space as your friends look confusedly around the ‘pong table in your frat basement while listening to Lil Wayne’s regrettably deathless “Lollipop” and suffering through that one new pledge who thinks he’s totally hood freestyle over the beat. Anyway, that deeply moving article touched me, and it made me realize that I, too, want to listen to music that will make me feel smart. DJ Earworm delivers.

Way back in 2007, when no one would have ever thought to throw a shoe in protest of anything other than Goldmember’s hugely disappointing lack of humor, DJ Earworm had a brilliant idea: what if, instead of just making a simple one-on-one mashup, someone were to create a mashup uniting songs with a common theme, like, say, their place in time. Luckily, he had a laptop handy, and mashed the top 25 songs of 2007 together into one pleasantly familiar yet amazingly creative 5-minute opus. And people dug it. So he did another one, for 2008. It was also awesome. And then I blogged about them. And that, dear readers, is how we got where we are right now. So listen to this, and then feel smart about how you’re helping to revolutionize the music business. It’s an exciting process, or so I’m told.
